Anaesthesiology

Introduction

The department of Anaesthesiology was established in the early sixties. Dr. Nasir Ahmad was the first HOD and was succeeded by Prof. P.C. Asthana. The department was twice headed by Prof. L.N. Jha. Post graduate degrees of M.D and diploma were started in the year 1986 (recognized in 2011) and 1982 respectively. Dr. S.P. Sahu and Dr. Jagannath Prasad were the subsequent HODs. Prof Dr. Ajit Kumar worked as the Department Head thence. Dr. Shanti Prakash was the HOD after him and then Dr. Usha Suwalka was the HOD. She is the first female Professer & HOD. Dr. Ladhu Lakra, is the the HOD at present.

The intake capacity of under graduate MBBS course 180 every year. The college provides post graduate education in almost all the departments which constitutes around 186 intake admission every year. The Institute offers D.M./ M.Ch. courses in Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Paediatric Surgery and Critical Care department.

Description

The department is linked to all surgical branches. Apart from psychiatric procedures, therapeutic, diagnostic and other medical procedures are regularly performed in an excellent infrastructure. LSAS training for EMoC is being conducted here for Rural Medical Officers under the NRHM, G.O.I.

Activities

Postgraduate Clinical work in routine and emergency O.T.s, seminars, case presentations, journal reading, CME, Conferences and workshops.

OPD

Pre Anaesthetic check-up clinic (PAC) is run well. Patients planned for surgeries in different surgical departments come for evaluation prior to surgery where they are guided for further procedures.

Working Pattern

The department functions from 9 AM to 5PM on routine days and 24 hours on emergency duty.

  • On Urogynec cases – April’16
  • Worshop organized by ENT for surgeries of cochlear transplant.
  • Live operative workshop on PCNL May’16

Future Plans

  • To run pain clinic with well equipped OPD, department and O.T for different procedures for pain management.
  • To start critical care unit in every OT.
  • To start virtual library and HMIS linked with the department.

Education

  • Undergraduate - Undergraduate Lectures and clinical posting are scheduled as per MCI and exams are scheduled at term ending.
  • Postgraduate - Postgraduate regular theory and clinical practical exams are conducted during their term endings and before university exams.

Facilities

  • For Students - Seminar room, Departmental museum, Library and P.G room are available. Manikins for training of C.P.R. and intubation are kept in the seminar room and have been procured through the NRHM.
  • For Patients - There is a Pre Anesthesia Checkup Room (PACR) in the department and separate pre- operative care rooms in OT complex.
