Dental Institute, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi

Introduction

The Dental Institute at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, stands as a landmark in government dental education in Jharkhand. Located in Bariatu, Ranchi, and established in 2016, it holds the distinction of being the first government dental college in the state, recognised by the National Dental Commission (formerly the Dental Council of India). In 2026, the institute achieved a significant milestone with the approval of its Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programme in all nine specialty departments of dentistry by the National Dental Commission, further cementing its role as a centre of excellence in dental education and healthcare.

History

The institute traces its roots to the Department of Dentistry established within the RIMS Medical College & Hospital complex, initially operating from the first floor of the OPD building with just six dental chairs. Recognising the urgent need to strengthen dental healthcare and build a skilled dental workforce in Jharkhand, a visionary initiative was undertaken to launch a full-fledged BDS programme under the RIMS umbrella. This endeavour not only addressed the shortage of dental professionals in the state but also extended quality oral healthcare to the wider public. The institute subsequently moved to its dedicated building, within the RIMS campus, marking a new chapter in its journey as the Dental Institute, RIMS, Ranchi.

Academic Programmes

The institute offers two flagship programmes in dental education:

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) — 63 seats (50 General + 13 EWS)
  • Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) — 27 seats across 9 speciality departments

The nine MDS speciality departments are:

  • Oral Medicine & Radiology (3 MDS seats)
  • Prosthodontics & Implantology (3 MDS seats)
  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (3 MDS seats)
  • Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics (3 MDS seats)
  • Periodontics (3 MDS seats)
  • Public Health Dentistry & Preventive Dentistry (3 MDS seats)
  • Oral Pathology & Microbiology (3 MDS seats)
  • Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics (3 MDS seats)
  • Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry (3 MDS seats)

Clinical Services

Integrated within the expansive RIMS government hospital campus, the Dental Institute provides comprehensive, affordable dental care to patients from across the region. Services encompass routine check-ups, preventive treatments, restorative and rehabilitative procedures, advanced surgical interventions, and outreach programs, ensuring that high-quality oral healthcare remains accessible to all segments of society.

OPD Timings

The Outpatient Department (OPD) operates six days a week with the following schedule:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • Saturday: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
