Genetics & Genomics

Introduction

The Department of Genetics and Genomics was inaugurated on July 6, 2022, with the aim of providing advanced molecular genetic diagnostics and conducting cutting-edge research in human genetics. Since its inception, the department has played a pioneering role in Jharkhand, becoming the first in the state to perform COVID genome sequencing during the pandemic. This effort was crucial in tracking viral mutations and guiding public health responses during the outbreak.

Description

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the department offers a range of genetic diagnostic services. It provides whole exome sequencing (WES), enabling the identification of genetic variations linked to various inherited disorders. Prenatal diagnostic services are available for sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, ensuring early detection and intervention. The department is also at the forefront of neurogenetic diagnostics, offering molecular screening for spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA1, 2, 3, 12, 17), Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) and Huntington’s disease. Advanced molecular techniques such as MLPA (Multiplex Ligation-Dependent Probe Amplification) are utilized for detecting mutations associated with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). We also offer screening services for Prader-Willi Syndrome, a genetic disorder that impacts growth and metabolism. These capabilities position the department as a regional leader in genetic diagnostics, providing patients with access to critical testing that was previously unavailable in the state.

The Department of Genetics and Genomics is actively engaged in cutting-edge research, with projects funded by ICMR, DHR, DBT, etc. Our research focuses on Sickle Cell Anemia, Parkinson’s Disease, Stroke, Spinocerebellar Ataxia, and Wilson’s Disease, alongside advancements in liquid biopsy for oral cancer and breast cancer genetics. Through molecular and multiomics approaches, we aim to uncover disease mechanisms, identify biomarkers, and enhance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Committed to precision medicine, our department bridges genetic research and clinical application, driving innovation in genomics-based healthcare.

With a strong foundation in both diagnostics and research, the Department of Genetics and Genomics continues to advance the field of molecular genetics in Jharkhand and beyond. By combining cutting-edge technology, expert knowledge, and a commitment to translational research, the department is making significant contributions to precision medicine, disease prevention, and improved patient care.
