Neurology

Introduction

The Neurology (Neuromedicine) department is the only government Neuromedicine centre in the state of Jharkhand. Rajendra institute of medical sciences (RIMS) was established in the year 1959-60, but there was no Neuromedicine department for 60 years. Department of Neurology was started in 2019 by Dr. Surendra Kumar, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of specialized neurological care at the institution. Dr. Surendra Kumar completed his Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Neurology from the renowned Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, one of India’s premier centers for neurological education, research, and patient care.

In addition to his DM (SGPGIMS, Lucknow), Dr. Kumar holds specialized postdoctoral fellowship training in Neurophysiology and Neurocritical Care (SGPGIMS, Lucknow), enabling the department to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based management of complex neurological disorders

Since its inception, the department has been committed to providing high-quality therapeutic, diagnostic and critical care services for a wide spectrum of neurological diseases, while emphasizing clinical excellence, patient-centered care, continuous academic growth and active involvement in clinical research and academic projects to enhance patient outcomes.

The Department of Neurology (Neuromedicine) currently has Out Patient Department (OPD) services on all the days of the week except Sundays, Inpatient department (IPD) catering to 20 functioning beds of which 5 beds dedicated for intensive care unit (ICU). The ICU of the department has high end monitors with every bed. Thrombolysis was performed for the first time in RIMS Ranchi in 2023 for acute ischemic stroke.

A strict academic schedule is followed and attended by all the faculty, senior residents (SR), junior residents (JR), house surgeons and research fellows. The schedule consists of a seminar, case presentation and a journal club meeting, all on a weekly basis.

Department of Neurology is also running Neurophysiology laboratory doing Electroencephalography and other investigations on daily basis.

Statistics

In the beginning of 2019 the department has seen 20,000 patients in OPD which gradually increased to up to 30,000-40,000 patients per year in the year 2024-2025. Neurology (Neuromedicine) OPD not only caters to the people of Jharkhand but also to the neighboring and distant states like Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal and others.

A 20 bedded IPD was started in 2021 during Corona period. IPD morning and evening rounds are conducted every day by the faculties and the residents.

Neurophysiology lab was started in 2021, and patients not only from Department of Neurology (neuromedicine) but from other departments benefitted from it. More than 20 procedures are done daily in the neurophysiology laboratory.

Department of Neurology is actively engaged in cutting edge research with projects funded by ICMR and intramural research programs. We are currently running three ICMR funded projects and three intramural research grants projects on Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy, Migraine, Neuroinfection and autistic spectrum disorders.

Most of the IPD patients (who have BPL card, Ayushman card, ration card) get their treatment as per government rules.

ICMR funded projects

  • Fever, hyperglycemia, swallowing, and Hypertension Management in Acute Stroke: Stepped Wedge Cluster Randomized Trial with Cross-sectional Data Collection (Indian Quality Improvement in Stroke Care Study). –Total budget: 4.67 Core (2022-till date).
  • Implementation of Tele stroke in Acute Stroke Thrombolysis and Stroke prevention in selected tribally dominated areas of the South, North & North East India- Total budget: 40 Lakhs (2025-till date).
  • Reducing the Burden of Cardiovascular Events with Antiplatelet Therapy in Patients with Intracerebral Haemorrhage – (BEAT-ICH).

Intramural funded projects

  • A pilot hospital based case-control study of Parkinson's disease to delineate associated environmental and genetic risk factors. Total budget: 4.85 Lakhs (2023-till date).
  • Genetic Determinants of Recurrent Ischemic stroke in Indian Patients.

Societies, Conference and meetings

First Indian stroke society conference was organized on 26th March 2023 at RIMS RANCHI Jharkhand under the guidance of ex Director and CEO Padamshree Dr. Kameshwar Prasad (President, Indian Stroke Society) and Dr. Surendra Kumar (Secretary, Indian stroke society). It was attended by more than 50 faculties and 200 delegates and many students.

Future

The Department of Neurology (Neuromedicine) is planning to start DM/ DNB course under the visionary guidance and leadership of Director and CEO RIMS Ranchi Prof. Dr. Rajkumar in the department. We are already prepared with the prerequisites required for the start of the program. The DM/DNB Neurology program will provide advanced specialty training within Jharkhand, offering extensive clinical exposure, hands-on experience in advanced diagnostics, and involvement in research. It will strengthen regional healthcare by producing skilled neurologists, improve access to specialized neurological care, and will reduce the need for out-of-state training.

Department is also planning to increase the number of faculties, residents, PhD students, number of beds to enhance patient care and research. Department is also planning to start Sub sections clinic like Autoimmune neurology, Epilepsy clinic, Stroke clinic, Movement disorder clinic, Headache clinic, Neurodegenerative disorder clinic, Neuro infection, Miscellaneous clinic.

The introduction of subspecialty clinics in the Department of Neurology will enable focused and comprehensive care for specific neurological disorders, improves diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes, and will promote standardized, evidence-based management. It will enhance clinical training and research opportunities, and will facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration, and improved patient access to specialized neurological services.

Department is also planning to start Stroke helpline services for the people of Jharkhand and nearby districts who can come in the golden hour of 4.5 hours.
