The department was started in 1963 headed by Prof. Dr. R.H.P. Sinha. Then a number of renowned ophthalmologists headed the department. In 2005 R.I.O started functioning the department.
Description
The department comprises of separate outdoor and indoor units and specialized investigation wing.
Future Plans
- To immediately start eye banking facility.
- To increase the number of cataract surgery.
- To start retina and glaucoma unit.
- To start regional institute of ophthalmology (R.I.O) in full strength in the new up-coming building situated in the RIMS campus.
- To make R.I.O. Centre of Excellence in collaboration with Government of India and Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai.
To make it a training centre for ophthalmologists of the state.
- To impart training to the Para-Ophthalmological courses.
- To do the community ophthalmology especially in the cataract surgery and school health check-up with the help of mobile units and N.G.Os.
Ward/Indoor
It is located in the 3rd floor of hospital and comprises of 2 units and 2 wards “A” and “B”. There are 7 beds for indoor patients.
