Orthopaedics

Introduction

Department of Orthopedics was started in RMCH Ranchi in the year of 1963 under Dr. (Prof) R.P. Singh. In 1973, the department was given recognition for MS. (Ortho) seats and in 1979 for Diploma (Ortho) seats.

At present, the department is running successfully under the guidance of Dr. L.B. Manjhi, Associate Professor and HOD since 01.10.2014 with 3 MS and 3 diploma students.

Description

Situated in the ground floor, the department is running 3 units for convenience of patients and better ward management under Dr. G.K. Gupta , with each having 2 OPDs per week. There is separate paraplegia ward (B1) for the patients of spine trauma . Patients are also admitted in the trauma centre for critical trauma management. Physiotherapy department is situated at the same floor for easy accessibility of patients.

Activities

CME-s workshops and seminars are organized at regular intervals for under & post graduates. PG students have represented the department in JOACON 2016 for quiz competition, paper in JOACON 2016 for quiz competition, paper presentation and won laurels. Faculty and PG students have published papers in various national and international journals & participated in various cadaveric and arthroplasty workshops.

OPD

Situated on 1st floor , Orthopedics OPD attends to approx 200 patitiently and neighboring states . Apart from regular cases . It also deals in cases ranging from Pediatric. Orthopedics (CTEV & Congenital deformities) Geriatric Orthopedics (lower back ache, osteoarthritis & osteoporosis ) oethopedics Oncology (GCT, Osteosarcoma salvage) inflammatory joint disorders and other rheumatologic diseases; sports injury; trauma to post- operative follow-up cases . CTEV patients are managed on a regular basis with cast and proper scoring under Cure Clubfoot India Organization . In the last 3 years , 300 successfully CTEV corrections have been done and documented .

*with rotatory Sunday emergencies.

WARD

Each unit is a 48 bedded ward with a separate 8 bedded cubic for female patients. The patients are given skeletal tractions as per requirement. Daily dressing and wound management is done by the dressers and the PG students under supervision of senior residents. Patients are advised bedside exercise and sent for regular physiotherapy & post- operative mobilization. In the paraplegia ward, special care is taken for avoidance of bedsores by strict physiotherapy. Patients are given orthotics and splint for re-mobilization. Clinics for the UG & PG students are conducted regularly by the faculty members.

Future Plans

Plans has been chalked out for starting Arthroscopy and spine cases .Modular OT and Cadaveric workshops are also included in the forthcoming projects.

Education

  • Undergraduate - The department strictly follows curriculum as per MCI guidelines which includes regular lectures , OPD visits, indoor/ward clinics, tutorials and mock tests.
  • Postgraduate - CME’S & seminars are held weekly on Fridays and Saturdays along with daily tutorials and clinics which includes patient examination and operative planning.

    • Clinic room and patient examination room to each ward .
    • Departmental library in CME room/Seminar hall having all the recent national & international journals, bones, instruments, implants and prosthesis .
  • For Patients - All patients are provided with adequate beds and diet, tractions with weights (as per requirement), regular pre- op and post- op dressing and wound management , critical care in trauma centre and regular physiotherapy along with intra departmental care for co- morbidities.
