Preventive and Social Medicine came into existence since the inception of this Medical College in 1965. Prof. Dr. C.J.K. Singh was the first Head of the Department of PSM and he headed the department from 1965 to 1986 followed by Dr. N.K. Prasad (1986-1990), Dr. (Mrs.) J. Minz (1990-1997), Prof. Dr. Shamim Haider from 02.06.1997 to 31.01.2016. Prof. Dr. Vivek Kashyap is the current HOD.
Description
This department has been designated as nodal agency of the several national health programs i.e. Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP), RMNCH+A program, UNICEF WIFS, NIPCCID program of Monitoring & Supervision of AWCs etc. Rural Health Training Center (RHTC) and Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) are two major arms of the department to facilitate the training and research work of Undergraduate And Post Graduate students in the field practice area of these centers. Both centers run as OPD and UHTC also has a facility to admit the patients for Maternal and Child care. At present, two ICMR Multi centric Extra Mural Research Projects are being carried out. Four research projects have been completed in last five years. This department always tries to participate in new innovative projects and implementation of National Program of Jharkhand state. This department has routinely organized different training program i.e. Hospital Waste Management, International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) and Research Methodology for faculty members, seniors Residents and PG students of this institute.

- To develop the leadership quality in students to fulfill one of the role of Indian Medical Graduates.
- To develop the Public health Laboratory model for the state
- To facilitate the faculties of the department to improve their skill for teaching and research
- To initiate and start the OPD at RHTC, Ormanjhi.
- To start Immunization clinic.
- Ph.D. M.Sc. (Biostatistics) and Diploma/ Certificate course in Medical Record Technology (DMRT) is being planned to start.
- To promote the research activities in this Institute.
- To facilitate the different activities in Medical Record Unit. i.e., computerization of BHT, ICD-10 coding for morbidity and mortality episode.
