Surgery

Introduction

The department of surgery in the erstwhile Rajendra Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) started in the early sixties. To start with, the department started functioning in the Sardar Hospital Ranchi.

Late Prof. P.N. Jaiswal was the first H.O.D. of surgery. He was a strict disciplinarian and his work was superb. His perfect tenure was succeeded by late prof. R.N. Tiwary. He was succeeded by Prof. Ghanshyam Das, a cool composed general as well as first qualified plastic surgeon of this region. MS Degree in surgery was recognized by M.C.I. during his tenure. He also started endoscopy and setup a burn and plastic unit. After the conversion of RIMS from RMCH, Prof. J. Prasad started the trauma centre. He was succeeded by Dr. V.K. Jain, who startd the oncology wing. Subsequently it was headed by Dr. N.K. Jha, a trained urologist, who contributed in the upliftment of surgical urology. Presently the department is running under the leadership of Dr. Shital Malua.

Description

Postgraduate courses started in the department in seventies with only 3 seats. Presently 16 students undergo training in each batch. They are now designated as junior residents.

The surgery department is well equipped with the latest equipment and gadgets are concerned.

Academic activities are done almost on daily basis. Live workshops, CME and conferences are frequent affairs in the department.

Activities

  • Undergraduate - Regular theory classes, demonstration of clinical cases group discussions, participations, in extracurricular activities, project and camp Activities.
  • Postgraduate - Basic Academic activities like research work, projects , presentations and publications, sports, cultural activities, Art of living including yoga and are done on a regular basis.

OPD

  • Daily from 9 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm.
  • Tier system of patient examination. Clinical demonstration units. Separate OPD for follow up cases.

Ward/Indoors

  • MAJOR /MINOR rounds with detail discussion about each patient
  • Preparation summary sheets, medico legal registry, regular discharge and referrals.
  • Teaching activity on bedside for UG, PG, and faculties.
  • Preparation of materials for rare and academically important cases for publications and preparations on academic platforms.

Future Plans

Laproscopic and endoscopic stations with modular OT. E-library with e-journals and books for clinical demonstrations. Equipped chamber for faculty like computer with printers, display gadgets etc.

Education

  • Undergraduate - Regular terminal Examination, mock Examination, day to day assessment in ward duties and tutorials. Monthly seminars en frequent CME.
  • Postgraduate - Weekly seminars monthly CME, tutorials, clinical discussion, surgical logbooks and by clinical publications and Presentations.

Facilities

  • For Students - Surgery seminar room with audio visual facility, Journal club and departmental library for students and teachers. Endosurgery and laparoscopy trainer unit, Experimental laboratory etc. are available.
  • For Patients - Surgical ICU, Postoperative wards, Burn ward with attached OT, Trauma center besides 6 units of general ward.
